'Speech of the Marquis del Vasto', c1540, (c1934). Alfonso d'Avalos , Marchese del Vasto, (1502-1546) was a noble Neapolitan, who participated in the Battle of Pavia and the conquest of Tunisia in 1535. The picture tells of an event in 1537 when Spanish troops stationed in Milan attempted a rebellion demanding his salary. The conflict was quelled by the Marquis himself thanks to his eloquence persuading his soldiers to leave his own son as collateral. Oil on canvas. Held in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
