The Heygate Estate is a large housing estate located in Walworth, Southwark, and South London. The estate is currently being demolished as part of the regeneration of the Elephant and Castle area and has been home to more than 3,000 people. There is just one occupant left living on the site. The estate developed a reputation for crime, poverty and dilapidation and residents complaints were mostly about the crime levels, noise and violence. The vast size of the blocks also meant there was little sense of community. The dwellings fell into disrepair in the 2000’s and was too costly to maintain and repair. Due to its urban decay and location, the estate has been extensively used as a filming location. Films have included Attack the Block, Shank and Harry Brown, World War Z, Luther (series 1 ep. 2) and The Bill TV series. High profile music videos, including "Hung Up" by Madonna and "Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)" by David Guetta have also been filmed on the estate. In total, 76 films have been made on the estate over three years to 2010, earning Southwark Council £91,000 in fees. The Skygarden Estate in Ben Aaronovitch's book Broken Homes is based on Heygate Estate. Quoted from Wikipedia. Image taken in August 2013 by Simon Webster.
