His fatherbeing called to the exercise or the ministry atAmsterdam in 1608, the subject of this articlewas placed under the tuition of an Englishman,called Matthew Slade,\vho was then rector of thecollege in that city. When properly qualifiedfor the university, he was placed in the Wallooncollege, at hoyden, where he distinguishedhimself by his proficiency in tha ditVerentbranches of academic learning, and particularlyin theology. When he had finished his courseof studies in the university, he preached withgreat applause in several French and Dutchchurches ; and then spent two years in travellingfor farther improvement, through Germany,
