Six days later a more serious com-plaint was made by Arbuthnot, that Bassandynewould not deliver to him, as he had contracted todo, the printing-house and the Bible, so far asprinted, wherethrough the wark lies idle, to thegreat hurt of the common weal of the realm. TheRegent having heard parties, and being ripelyadvised by the Lords of Council, ordered Bas-sandyne to deliver the printing-house and Bible before the end of the month. Bassandyne is believed to have died early in 1579, and in July that year the first Bible printed in THE NEWE TESTAMENT SYS CHRIST. J^educed facsimile of New Testament title. in Scotland was finished and in circulation; and itshows that Bassandyne commenced with the NewTestament, which bears his imprint on the titleand the date of 1576; while that of the OldTestament bears the name of Arbuthnot and 1579In the following month of August, Arbuthnot wasmade Kings printer, and received power to printall works in Latin, English, or Scots, tending tothe glory of God and commonweal of this realm,he obtaining first special license thereupon ; andhe had special license granted him at the sametime to print and sell Bibles in the vulgar Inglis,Scottis, and Latin toungis, with ane callendar, forten years.
