Colonel Orange Sackett came to MonroeCounty, New York, about 1815, and for anumber of years followed a variety of call-ings, such as farming, selling goods in gen-eral stores, and school teaching. He is stillremembered as one of the most successfulteachers in that region. Finally he opened ageneral merchandise store on his own accountat Riga, Monroe County, and after carrying iton for fourteen years sold out, and removed tothe town of York, Livingston County, wherehe bought a farm of six hundred acres, onlytwenty acres of which were cleared. Thiswas in 1833, or eleven years after his mar-riage. The first work he had to do onhis rmimproved farm, which was very nearly asquare mile in area, was to repair the old loghouse; and in this he and his family lived formany years. In 1822 Colonel Sackett wasmarried to Amanda Minerva Sheldon, of thetown of Sheffield, Berkshire County, reared eight children, four boys and. HOMER SACKETT. A portion of the original farmstill remains in the possession of the Sackettfamily, it being owned by Samuel, the fifthchild born to Colonel Orange and Amanda. Their first-born was Homer, the subject ofthis sketch, who was ten years old when theyremoved to York. He received the rudi-ments of his education in the Monroe Countydistrict schools, and then attended an acad-emy in Connecticut, and later the Lima Semi-nary. Like his grandfather, Homer Sacketthas always been a farmer; and on April 4,1853, he came to Avon, and rented one of theWadsworth farms.
