Field Marks: This species, with the Herring, Thayer's, Glaucous, and Great Black-backed Gulls, represents a most difficult group to iden- tify. The complex plumages and interrelationships between species cause frequent misidentifications. Many have been misidentified even in museums with the specimen in hand; frequently a gull has been collected, only to find that it was not the species it was thought to have been in the field. It is beyond the scope of this book to provide comprehensive field marks.
