The economizers are of Greens make, 128 pipes to eachboiler. The scraper gear of each economizer is also electricallydriven through worm gearing. An elaborate coal and ash-conveying system, installed by themanufacturers of the boilers, is in use. The arrangement of steam pipe work is extremely simple, ascan be seen in the plan. Each boiler, economizer and steamgenerator forms a unit, and is connected by means of an pipe. A 10-in. main steam pipe in the boiler house sim-. ply acts as an equalizer between the various units. The pipesare of weldless mild steel, having a tensile strength of 24 THE POWER STATION OF THE BELFAST TRAMWAYS and three of the large lighting generators can be run on thetramway load, if required. BOILERS AND AUXILIARIESThe layout of the boiler house is shown in the plan. Eachboiler is provided with its own economizer immediately at theback, and this opens direct into the main flue. By this meansthe economizers receive the full heat value of the waste gasesbefore cooling, due to radiation or leakage, can take Babcock & Wilcox water-tube boilers have been erectedin the railway extension. Each boiler has a heating surface of5764 sq. ft. and a grate area of 100 sq. ft., and is capable ofevaporating from 20,000 lbs. to 25,000 lbs. of water per hourfrom and at 212 degs. F. Each boiler is fitted with a B. & superheater having 900 sq. ft. of heating surface, andcapable of imparting a superheat of 150 degs. F. to the steamproduced by the boiler. Each boiler is also provided with adouble 5-ft. x ioTft. chain grate
