Knut the polar bear cub in Berlin Zoo
Knut became a worldwide celebrity when media covered the story of how he was hand-reared in Berlin Zoo because his mother Tosca rejected him at birth. He was born on December 5 and had his first public appearance in Berlin Zoo on March 23. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to see him and all kinds of merchandise has been based on him. The German Environment Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, has adopted him to highlight the plight of polar bears in the wild due to climate change.
