Two Sumatran tigers cooling off near the foot of a waterfall The male Sumatran tiger cub born June 12 2005 has been named Wiley Heran The female sibling Sumatran tiger cub born June 15 2005 has been named Alyce Ratu This pair of rare Sumatran tiger cubs were born in the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered species Less than 400 live in the wild in Sumatra and only 61 in North American zoos Some of the variations of this species are the Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the world s tiger family Panthera tigris They are one of the two species that can be seen in water and will swim to cool itself and search for prey They have webbed toes to assist with the swimming The stripes are narrower on their darker orange to dark red coat Their whiskers and cheek hairs are longer It has white spots on the ears apparently to appear to have eyes in the back of it s head to aid in self protection
