Sometimes we beheld very san-guinary scenes ; the voracious hydrophilus would seize apoor defenceless tadpole, and rend him in pieces for ameal without any compunction. The more robust tritonsdefended themselves better, but sometimes they also suc-cumbed in the struggle.
