St Mary the Virgin's church, Painswick, Stroud, Gloucestershire, C15th parish church (nave & tower 1480-90, spire 1632) with unique collection of pedestal & table tombs & monuments mainly C17th & C18th: From front; (45) henry Loveday of the Mill, Yeoman 1781: William Loveday of the Mill, Yeoman, 1820: John Wight, Clothier, 1731:John Packer, Clothier, 1733. Carved in local limestone by Painswick craftsmen they reflect prosperity of local wool merchants. Circa. 99 clipped yews in churchyard, mainly C18th, legend: Devil removed 100th every time it was planted, will never allow 100 trees to grow.
