Chlamydia psittaci. Coloured Transmission electron micrograph of the bacteria Chlamydia psittaci. These spherical Gram-negative bacteria live only inside cells. Each bacteria has a double cell membrane and cell contents are seen. They are a group of organisms intermediate in size between bacteria and viruses. Chlamydia psittaci was first found in parrots (psittacine, hence the species name) and occurs in pigeons and poultry. It is transmitted from birds or poultry to humans, causing a type of pneumonia called psittacosis. It is a rare infection which may be fatal in the elderly and weak. Treated with antibiotics.
