The Dial-garden at Friar Park, Henley-on-Thames,is laid out on the plan of the Versailles labyrinth, but inplace of the statuary groups are thirty-nine sun-dials, eachhaving its motto or epigram. Adjoining it is a maze oforiginal and ingenious design. The Versailles example was only one of several well-known mazes which existedin or around Paris at thattime. Evelyn, who spentsome years in Paris, from1643 onwards, remarks onthe design and trimness ofthe box-hedge designs in thegardens of the Luxembourgand on the labyrinth ofcypresse at the Tuileries,no doubt designed by Du Cerceau (Fig. 92).
