An old engraving from the River Thames showing the Custom House, City of London, England, UK in the 1600s. Merchant ships are on the river and in front of the building are wooden cranes. The site was long known as ‘Wool Quay’ and a custom house levied duty payable on exported wool. Around 1380, one John Churchman built a custom house there. It remained in use until 1559. Its replacement (shown here) was erected under the direction of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, the Lord High Treasurer. This structure was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
