The fringeswere also an important was the custom in those daysfor people to receive their friendsin bed (as described underAbraham Bosse in an earlier partof this book), and for the kingsand other great personages to giveaudience while in bed, andthis, no doubt, was one of thecauses that led the bedstead to betreated so sumptuously. Someof the best bedsteads costalmost fabulous sums. Thefollowing are a few of the moreimportant bedsteads that were inuse about this time.
