Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, satellite image. This gorge is one of the richest sites of fossils of human ancestors. Louis and Mary Leakey made several discoveries here, including stone tools and the fossilised remains of Homo habilis and Paranthropus (formerly Australopithecus and Zinjanthropus) boisei. This image, which is kilometres wide, was taken on 1st February 2001 by the ASTER instrument on the Terra satellite.
