In the year 1322, the fraternity, then richly endowed among thesurrounding lands, and lodged in a magnificent edifice, received an unpleasantvisit from the retreating army of Edward II. It is said that the fugitivesexpected food, and were irritated by the attenuated condition to which themiseries of hostile invasion had reduced the monastic larder, with everythingelse that had been rich and prosperous in the land.
