The new Main street lighting system ofMemphis, Tenn., is composed of 320 orna-mental iron standards, each supportingfive high-power tungsten lights. One 100-watt light on each standard burns allnight, while four 60-w-att lights burn onlyuntil midnight. The accompanying illus-tration shows but a part of the new Mainstreet lighting system, which extends overa distance of 2i^ miles. The lamps wereinstalled upon the front-foot assessmentplan; that is. the owners of abutting prop-erty paid for the standards and for in-stallation, on a front-foot basis, and thecity maintains the light, supplying thecurrent and keeping the standards paintedand in good condition. The city has beengiven full title to the lamps. The stand-ards are placed 70 feet apart. They weremanufactured by the Casey-Hedges Com-pany, of Chattanooga, Tenn. wagons.
