Captain Poefound the old Confederate line of defense of too great extent tobe held by such a force as Sherman intended to leave as garrisonof the town. Consequently, he selected a new line of muchshorter development which passed through the northern part ofthe town, making necessary the destruction of many buildings inthat quarter. Barnard ishere at work sensitizinghis plates in a light-prooftent, making his exposures,and developing immedi-ately within the tent.
