W. viridula (L.) Hedw. is a species common in rather dry soil and occasion-ally growing in more moist situations. It is exceedingly variable in its jieri-stome and its size. Our plants are mainly of the smaller size figured in theplate, but the capsules are nearly always erect. It may usually be distinguishedfrom Jslomiiiii when sterile by its larger size and longer leaves. The capsulesdo not apparently become wrinkled as shown in the plate until they havereached a considerable age. The generic characters and the figures will servefor the ready identification of our only species. The spores mature in Californian forms the peristome is almost entirelv PLATE XXIII. IVeisiti (From Bry. Eur,)- The figures are all self-explanatory. TORTULACEAE 141 GYMNOSTOMUM Hedw. Plants dioicous, densely casspitose, ferruginous below, growing mostly inlimestone regions. Leaves small, gradually increasing in size upwards, tuftedat apex, scarcely crisped when dry, but somewhat twisted and appressed, linear-lanceolate to narrowly linear, costa and lamina papillose on both sides withrather low papilliE; lower cells rectangular, upper roundish quadrate; capsulelong-exserted, erect, symmetric, ovoid to oblong-ovoid, smooth and glossy whenfirst ripe; peristome lacking, lid falling easily or remaining attached to thecolumella, calyptra cucullate, extending half way down the capsule.
