Factor of adhesion, Of another distinct type of industriallocal locomotives a recent consignmentof which were furnished for service inSouth Africa, as shown in Fig. 2, the typeof side tanks are desirable for hot cli-mates because the water does not becomeheated from the boiler. This is a de-sirable design for power on light rails orsoft roadbeds, with reasonable curves, and also where the length of run does notrequire a separate tender. It is stronglyconstructed and is reported to stand wellagainst hard conditions with light re-newals. This type is also made in varioussizes, the dimensions of the type shown inthe illustration is as follows: Gauge, 3 ft. 6 ins. Cylinders, 16 ins. by 20 EIGIIT-WHEEL-CONNECTED SIDE-TANK LOCOMOTIVE FOR THE GOVERN-MENT RAILWAYS OF SOUTH AFRICA. light rails, and where the run is not longenough to require a separate tender. Theboiler is of a liberal capacity, the framesand machinery throughout of strong con-struction, and these locomotives are tobe depended upon for hard work and lowupkeep. The general dimensions of thistype of locomotive are variable, accordingto the variations in the service for whichthey are required. In the illustrationgiven they are as follows: Diameter of driving wheels, 40 , 11 ft. 10 over bumpers, 27 ft. 6 , rail to top of stack, 13 in working order, 96,000 capacity, 1,200 capacity, coal, 3,000 capacity, wood, 90 cubic pressure, 180 force, 19,580 of adhesion, March. 1916.
