A manual of modern surgery : an exposition of the accepted doctrines and approved operative procedures of the present time, for the use of students and practitioners . and fascia are dissected up-wards, leaving at first the ligament of the patella and the boneitself uninjured. This isa better method probably than that which divides the ligament of thepatella when the cutaneous incision is made. The ends of the femurand tibia are readily protruded after the ligamentous capsule has been removed, and the saw is applied so asto avoid injury to the epiphyseal carti-lages. Sutures or nails may be em-ployed to hold the bones in appositionbut are not necessary, if a good splintof gypsum, metal or wood is adaptedto the limb. A high soled shoe isworn to compensate for the removalof bone. Fig.
