Prop roots on a Cecropia sp. tree. This is a pioneer tree that colonises open areas of floodplains. The roots, as well as supporting the tree's thin hollow stem, allow sufficient oxygen uptake when under water. This evergreen tree is intolerant of shade and fast-growing. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador.
