Previous to sowing the seed, mix a few shovelfuls of well-rotted manure in each hill, and plant in each 12 to 15 seeds; after all danger of the bugs is over, thin out to 3 plants per hill. When about 1 foot long, pinch off the tips to make them branch, as it strengthens the growth of the vines, and makes the fruit mature earlier. A few hills, for early use, may be had by sowing on pieces of sod in a hot-bed, and when warm enough transplant to open ground. Jenny Eind.
