In 1814, being thenBy permission of Publishers of Memorial History of Htfd. Co. ^ resident of Iltfd., Conn., he gave to the world his wonderful discovery of Aninthesia, by which, by the use ofnitrous oxide gas, surgery could be divested of pain. Though others afterward en-deavored to wrest from him the merit of originality in this great discovery, theirefforts have only served more surelj- to establish his claims. In 1846, he wentto France, to lay his discovery before the medical profession of that country, and succeeded in convincing them of its value, as was evidenced by the fact that theMedical Society of Paris honored him with the honorary title of in the spring of 1847 from his trip to Europe (the expenses of which. THE WELLS FAMILY. 787 were defrayed by the purchase of pictures which he imported and sold in the UnitedStates), he published a small pamphlet, .4 Hktnry of the Bisconery oftlie Applicationof Nitrous Gas, Ether, and other Vapors to Surgical Operations, giving the re-sults of his experiinents, etc. At this time, also, he gave lectures on ornithology,a branch of natural history in vfhich he was well versed. He died 24 Jan., 1848,in N. Y. city, where he had gone for the purpose of introducing anajstlietics inthe hospitals and in dentistry. We feel that it is an honor to claim this modest andgifted scientist, the discoverer of the greatest boon to humanity of modern times,as a grandson of Ancient Windsor.
