Bambridge and the Gaols Committee. Members of the House of Commons Gaols Committee (wearing red) in 1729 questioning Thomas Bambridge (second from left), the warden of Fleet Prison in London, England. Bambridge was being investigated for brutal and unlawful treatment of prisoners (one wearing a punishment collar at lower centre). The members of the committee included James Oglethorpe (third from left, holding a skull cap device) and Sir Archibald Grant (third from right, holding shears device). Bambridge was subsequently tried at the Old Bailey for the murder of a prisoner. This engraving is by Thomas Cook, based on an original painting commissioned by Grant from English painter William Hogarth (1697-1764). This engraving was published in June 1803.
