Molly bands today recreate the traditional East Anglian (Fen) groups of plough boys and other agricultural workers, who danced in January outside mansions, begging for money during winter - a time of unemployment. They would threaten to plough up the lord's lawns if money was not given. So the dancers disguised themselves with blackened faces
