The source of a volcano lies deep inside Earth, where temperatures are hot enough to melt rock. This melted rock is called magma. Hot and lightweight, it rises out of the mantle and is stored in the magma chamber. Over time, the magma that has collected in the chamber cuts a path through the crust. The volcanic eruption occurs when the magma escapes from the crater. At this point, magma becomes runs down the sides of the volcano.
