Strandja mountians Bulgaria July 2nd 2014: Individual households in rural areas are estimated to own at least 70% of the countries dairy cows. After the fall of communism in 1989 state co-operatives were liquidated and cattle distributed amongst former employees. Using the communal herd system cows are grouped into a single herd by day and cared for by village herdsman on alpine pastures and meadows. Farmers today barter with their products in village squares and town markets. Today farmers meet the EU requirements that a few years ago threatened closure to over 27,000 small dairy farms. ©Clifford Norton/Alamy Live News
