Alfalfa mosaic virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virus particles (virions) of the alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV). This plant virus is an alfamovirus, and has an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome. It was first identified in 1931 in the alfalfa plant (Medicago sativa), an important forage crop for livestock. This virus also infects a wide range of other plants, including tomato, tobacco, pea and potato plants. Symptoms range from white flecks to wilting and tissue death. The virus is transmitted by several species of aphids, and also, in alfalfa plants, by pollen into the seeds. Magnification: x125,000 when printed 10cm high.
