In the backgroung is Pu'upu'a'i, a cinder cone that formed during the 1959 Kilauea eruption. Puu Puai means 'gushing hill'. It sits by `Uwealoha (Byron Ledge), the landform between Kilauea Caldera and Kilauea Iki Caldera. AKA 'The Fire Pit', Halemaumau Pit Crater is thought to be home to the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, Pele. Halemaumau means 'house of everlasting fire'. The white deposits are magnesium, the yellow sulphur dioxide (SO2)
