Thomas Huxley. Caricature of Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-95), British biologist. Huxley helped to popularize Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. As Darwin was a shy man who shunned publicity, Huxley defended the theory from its critics. He gained a reputation as a forceful and witty writer and debater and became known as \Darwin's bull- dog\". Huxley presented Darwin's theory in 1860 at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford. Huxley won the day against his opponent, Bishop Samuel Wilber- force. Huxley's studies confirmed that humans were primates. He turned the evolution debate into one of science rather than emotion."
