His bodywas brought to England to be interred, although the Dutch begged to be allowedto keep it, pledging themselves if their request wns complied with, to erect amonument of almost unheard-of magnificence. The remains, however, werevery properly kept possession of by Sidneys countrymen, and ultimately in-terred at St. Pauls. The national grief was most, extraordinary—the wholekingdom went into mourning, and scarcely ever did a comparatively privateindividual depart this life attended with so much public regret.
