A group of 19th Century women in conversation if front of the twin-towered gatehouse of Tonbridge Castle in Kent, England was built by Richard de Clare, to guard the crossing of the River Medway. It was built by the third Earl of Hertford or his son Gilbert and took 30 years, being completed in 1260. The great seal of England was temporarily kept here during one of Edward I's visits to France.
