A strainer shown at /is placed in the bottom of the pump to prevent the entranceof particles that would injure the pump or clog the nozzle. 40. Knapsack Sprayer.—The outfit illustrated in Fig. 15consisting of a brass force pimip surrounded by a copper ora galvanized-iron tank, is known as a knapsack sprayer,and may be used for small trees or bushes. The tank holds §2 ESSENTIALS OF FRUIT CULTURE 31 about 5 gallons and is made to fasten to the back by means ofthe straps c. The material of which the tank should be madedepends on the spray solution to be used. If lime-sulphuris to be used, the tank should be of galvanized iron, as thesolution will very quickly destroy copper. If Bordeaux mixtureis to be used, the tank should be of copper, as the Bordeauxmixture has a somewhat injurious effect on iron.
