Trucks carrying raw coal to be sold to residents of the capital Ulaanbaatar arrives on the outskirts of the city, January 14, 2019. More than half of the city's million live in the impoverished ger districts and over 200,000 households within these districts burn coal in the winter months to keep warm, exasperating the pollution problem. UNICEF Mongolia has warned of a looming “child health crisis” linked directly to the high pollution levels in the winter months. Preliminary data suggests a increase in fatal mortality rates between summer and winter and a close correlation between between stillbirths and air toxicity.
