. Advances in herpetology and evolutionary biology : essays in honor of Ernest E. Williams. Williams, Ernest E. (Ernest Edward); Herpetology; Evolution. N 5 10 15 Km Thomazeau Porf-au-Prlnce. PETION-VILLE Figure 1. Collecting areas in Haiti, indicated by asterisks. computer analysis. All data of a display were punched on an IBM card; these included: 1) displayer's location; 2) dis- player's species; 3) displayer's individual identification if known; 4) display type; 5) social context if known; 6) frames of film for each unit; 7) number of bobs for units depicting a bob series; 8) number of dewlap pulses if present; and 9) whether filmed in the field or lab. An IBM 370 computer then: 1) converted fps to real time for each unit; 2) computed descrip- tive statistics (mean, standard deviation of the mean, standard error of the mean, and minimum and maximum values) for each display variable; 3) calculated the coefficient of variation (standard devia- tion X 100/mean) for each variable; and 4) performed tests of significance. DAP Graphs The visual summaries resulting from the display analysis appear as display- action-pattem graphs (DAP graphs). These graphs show head amplitude movement along the y-axis and the pas- sage of time along the x-axis. Thus a quick up-and-down head bob will look like a "spike" when graphed, and a bob which is held before the head is lowered will have a "plateaued" appearance. If the dewlap is extended during the dis- play, it appears on the DAP graph under the head bobs; the dewlap extension is shown as a downward vector along the y-axis, dewlap retraction as an upward vector along the y-axis, and passage of time follows the Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Williams, Ernest E.
