Canons--^ burg. Pa., in May, 1848. In the same year a chapter was established atthe sister college at Washington. The sturdy religious character of these colleges had a marked effect onthe whole life of the fraternity, and is represented in our day by Bishop Mac-Laren of Chicago, Bishop Hartzell of Africa and Gen. Lew Wallace, During the first ten years the fraternity extended into the great southwest,where the hearts of men were great, while their heads and hands were busywith the foundations of things that will keep our country great and good forcenturies to come. The war blighted the Southern schools, but the men who had been loyalas Phi Gamms were loyal as men, and are found in education, in business,in the professions, m every good work, leading the advance.
