Qaanaaq, also known as "new Thule," Greenland, Arctic
Qaanaaq is also known as "new Thule" because it was founded in 1953 when the original settlement of Thule was relocated away from the top-secret US Air Force base at Pituffik. Today the town of 675 mostly Inuit hunters and fishermen is the municipal seat of a district covering 279,000 sq km, with a total population of only about 1,000 people, northern Greenland.
