Judenplatz was the site of the Jewish Ghetto in medieval 1996 the British artist Rachel Whiteread was the controversial winner of a competition to design a memorial to the Jewish victims of the holocaust. The memorial was unveiled on 9th November, 1999, the anniversary of Kristallnacht.
