The manufacture of pulp and paper : a textbook of modern pulp and paper mill practice. ated centrallyinside the drum is a stationary trough or compounding box F,see view (6), which is also divided into compartments, tocorrespond with the compartments in the rotating drum. The stock enters through inlet G into the first compartment ofthe compounding box F and is delivered from this compartmentover apron H into a corresponding compartment in the rotatingdrum C. The impact of the stock against the screen plate /screens a considerable part of it. The unscreened residue fromthe first compartment is carried by the rotating drum on radialpartitions to the top of the machine and dropped into the secondcompartment Fi of the compounding box; from here, it is againdelivered over apron // into the corresponding compartment ofthe rotating drum. This action continues through the remainingcompartments of the compounding box and the drum until allthe good stock is removed and the rejections are dischargedthrough the outlet J. This explains why the action is com- 44 TREATMENT OF PULP 17. FINE SCREENING 45 pounded and why the compartments become smaller as theyapproach the tailing end of the drum, since each compartmenthas a smaller amount of stock to handle than the preceding accepted stock passes through the plates throughout theentire screen drum and is discharged through the outlet K, seeview (a). Shower pipe L dilutes the unscreened residue whilebeing delivered to each succeeding compartment. Shower pipesM are for the purpose of forcing all unscreened residue out of therotating drum into the compounding box and keeping plates /clean.
