The favorite residence of the Commenianemperors was the palace of the Blackernae, the ruinsof which are quite picturesque. The Seraglio is ofthe greatest interest and consists of a community ofbuildings decorated in various tiles, arabesques,bronze, ivory, mother-of-pearl, and gold. The newone was started in 1 468 and becamethe home of the sultans for threecenturies. A battlemented wall ofsquare towers separates it from Stam-bul, enclosing terraces of beautifulgardens. Next to the Seraglio inimportance is the Dolma Baghtcheh,with its picturesque setting enclosedby two richly decorated gates. Itlies north of the Golden Horn andpresents a varied architecture whichdetracts from the general appear-ance. The interior is finished mcarved doors of mahogany; gor-geously frescoed Parian marble bath-rooms; malachite fireplaces; mirrorsone hundred feet square: costlybronzes, etc. Just beyond is the palace of Beylerbey, erected in 1865. Upon the in-terior of this marble structure is one great hall of columns with a decorativemarble staircase. Numerous gardens and kiosks surround the palace which
