Silver Mining, Cerro Rico

A boy walks through the streets of UNESCO world heritage site Potosi. A dynamite booth on the streets of Potosi. Claimed to be the highest city in the world at almost 4000 meters, Potosi sits below the looming mountain "Cerro Rico" (rich mountain) which has been mined for silver ore since the 1500s. Today small bands of cooperatives still mine the mountain using dangerously old equipment and unregulated dynamite. Cerro Rico produced much of Spain's wealth in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries at the cost of thousands of slaves.
