The body mass index (BMI) is a measure used to quantify tissue mass based on the weight and height of an individual. The BMI was designed to categorize a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, in order to determine possible health risks such as malnutrition or eating disorders. However, a person's BMI my not accurately reflect body fat percentage. For example, professional athletes have a high muscle to fat ratio, resulting in a misleadingly high BMI.
