Hemis Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in Ladakh and belongs to the Drukpa Lineage or the dragon order of Tibetan Buddhism. It is situated 45 km from Leh and is said to have been first established in the 11th century, and then re-established in the 17th century.
