A 1988 sculpture, Anthony Heywood’s ‘Elephant Mother’, amongst the office workers in City of London, England, UK 1993. This was part of 1993’s ‘Art in the City’ and was aimed at setting sculpture amongst the green spaces and the distinctive architecture of the City of London. Anthony Heywood (b 1952) often uses ready-mades natural materials and household detritus in his work. Objects including television sets, ornaments, the used and the useless, are used to subvert their functions. The elephant is a recurring subject. Visible centre right, just behind the mother, is a smaller, calf elephant.

A similar scheme, ‘Sculpture in the City’, began in 2011 with artworks by internationally acclaimed and emerging artists on display each summer. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1990s photograph.
