AMERICAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL. 35 20-INCH UNIVERSAL MONITOR LATHE. The universal monitor lathe, illustrated herewith, is de-signed for general brass turning and similar work of specialand heavy character, and with the object of economicallyperforming manufacturing operations without special turret carriage is provided with an automatic feed, simi-lar to that of an ordinary engine lathe, and the four coarsestfeeds are 8, 11%, 14 and 18 per in., conforming with thestandard pipe threads. This arrangement not only avoids thestripping of the threads in large tapping, but inside andoutside straight and taper threads may be cut by a turrettool without a tap or die. There are 12 changes of feed inall, the other eight being multiples by 3 and 6 of the fourcoarse feeds. Four changes of feed can be made instantlyby a handle, located below the headstock, and the reverse ismade by a knob in front of the apron. hand threads
