Prostate surgery. Patient undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), an endoscopic surgical procedure to remove part of the prostate gland. The prostate is part of the male reproductive system and sits below the bladder. TURP may be carried out to treat enlargement of the prostate or to biopsy the prostate. A resectoscope, a type of endoscope, is inserted in the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder through the penis. A camera (image displayed at top left) and instruments are inserted through the resectoscope. An instrument with a heated loop at the end is used to cut away part of the enlarged prostate.
