The medullary sheath shows here and there deepannular constrictions, Ranviers nodes (Fig. 30, a),which almost completely divide it. Schwanns sheathcovers the axis cylinder which is somewhat decreasedin size. The nucleus is situated between these twoconstrictions in Schwanns sheath, and the medullarysheath at brief intervals shows clefts which are knownas Lantermanns segments; these pass obliquely almostthrough the myelin, thus forming furrows one aboveanother. The limits of this chapter upon the cen-tral nervous system do not allow us to discuss theperipheral termination of the nerves in the mus-cles, skin, internal organs, and the organs of special senses.
