The difference between such CYSTOMA. 183 an artificial matrix and a genuine tumor-matrix is the limited prod-uct of the epithelial proliferation. Kaufmann studied the behavior ofattached buried epithelial cells by resorting to a procedure which heterms enkatarrJiopliy. He selected for this purpose the cocks two elliptical incisions an island of skin was circumscribed; it wasthen buried by suturing over it the margins of the wound. In someof the successful cases the result was followed until the 210th of the specimens obtained at variable periods after theoperation showed that at the margins of the buried skin the epithelialcells proliferated, resulting in the formation of a cyst-wall linedthroughout by epithelial cells. The cysts formed in this manner con-tained a material which resembled the contents of an atheromatous ,^^^ ^- ^ ^ -- -. )j O^ Fig. 93.—Traumatic epithelial cyst of finger (after Garre); a, skin ; b, subcutaneous tissue; c, epithelial cyst. cyst. The growth of the cysts continued until they reached a certainlimited size, when it ceased and the cysts remained stationary. Garre recently reported two cases of traumatic epithelial cysts ofthe fingers. In both cases the injury which preceded the cyst-forma-tion was a punctured wound. The cyst developed soon after the one case the cyst was 12 millimeters in length and 7 to 8 millimetersin width. A section through the centre of the tumor showed a centralcavity (Fig. 93). The implanted fragment of skin could readily beidentified by its characteristic anatomical structure. The epithelial cellsat the margins produced new cells which converted the piece of skininto a globular mass well supplied with blood-vessels. The cyst con-tained exclusively epidermic cells arranged in wavy stratified the o
